Farming Methodology

AT THE RUTABAGA RANCH,
WE BELIEVE HEALTH AND
WELLNESS START IN THE GROUND
OUR FOOD GROWS IN.

“WE HOPE TO CULTIVATE THE IDEA THAT HAVING A FAMILY FARMER, IS AS IMPORTANT AS HAVING A FAMILY DOCTOR.”

Growing nutrient-dense food has a direct link to regenerating our soil health and improving our environmental impact. Sustainability begins on your plate and ends with improved health and wellness for all.

We throw around a lot of words that are very meaningful to us, but we understand some may not know what- in- the- heck we’re talking about. Please find these definitions below to help you better understand where your food comes from.

We acknowledge that the land on which we gather is the traditional unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishnaabeg People. We are grateful to have the opportunity to be present in this territory.

01 Carbon Sequestering

is the process of capturing and storing atmospheric carbon dioxide. It is one method of reducing the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere with the further goal of reducing global climate change.

02 Regenerative Agriculture

is how we describe our farming practices, which means not just “sustaining” the soil we grow in or the climate, but improving the soil ecology and environment year after year. Regenerative Agriculture is far from a new concept. This “new” “trendy” term relates to practices indigenous folks have been doing all along. Intercropping, protecting nature and working within the mind frame people are earth. People are soil. And people are nature.

It is only through their teachings, we have access to these types of methods.

03 Biodiversity

is the shortened form of two words “biological” and “diversity”. It refers to all of the variety of life found on Earth (plants, animals, fungi and micro-organisms) as well as to the communities in which they form and the habitats where they live.

04 Local

Local food can be defined by the distance between where the food is grown and where it is sold or consumed; however, the common definition used by the general population considers food “local” if it was grown within 100 miles.

05 No Till

is an agricultural technique for growing crops or pasture without disturbing the soil through tillage. No-till farming decreases the amount of soil erosion that tilling causes in certain soils, specifically sandy and dry matter on sloping terrain. Other possible benefits include an increase in the amount of water infiltrating into the soil, retention of organic matter, and nutrient cycling. These methods may increase the amount and variety of life in and on the soil.
